Don’t Drop the Soap – Rihanna Assumes the Role of Marion Crane in the Bates Motel

rihanna showerComic-Con has been full of surprises this year, and this is certainly one we never would have seen coming. Rihanna, famous singer, actress and all-round celebrity, will soon be joining the cast of Bates Motel, the drama series based on the story of Psycho.

The news was announced on the Friday of Comic-Con, where producers confirmed that Rihanna is working with them for the next season, just before they confirmed that the overall series will be ending after its fifth season.

Rihanna is expected to assume the role of Marion Crane, the character that was originally played by Janet Leigh back in 1960, in the now notorious Alfred Hitchcock movie classic. Marion was the character who checked into the Bates Motel but who never got to check out. As she was showering, she saw that terrifying moment where the shadow of a man wearing his mom’s night dress held a knife in the air and stabbed her to death.

So yeah – Rihanna’s coming onto the series only to get stabbed to death by Norman Bates, the psychotic murderer who becomes obsessed with his mother. Hardly a starring role, but hey, it’s definitely legendary!

In a statement released after the announcement at Comic-Con, Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse, the executive producers of the show, said:

“We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way. We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate,”

The last season of the show resulted (spoiler alert!) Norma Bates, the mom of Norman Bates, filled the house with carbon monoxide. The next series will be the finale that we’ve been waiting for, and it’s going to take a hell of a lot of work to make it as legendary as the 60s classic. I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
